I’ve been happily engaged in a new program called, “Wonder Week.” We had six girls ages 10-13 here at the monastery last week. Each day began with a “Chapter Meeting” and ended, usually, with a swim in our pool. On Thursday, the girls spent the night. Our “slumber party” was great fun. Karaoke, movies and a makeshift campfire (bad weather expected) that I constructed from Lava lamps, were the highlights. Most were asleep by 2-ish, (AM, that is!) Friday began with pancakes and ended with a pizza supper to which Mom and Dad were invited.
I’ll be honest here. I had no idea if this was going to work – if our new friends would actually have fun in the monastery. GOD never stops surprising me. It was five wonderful days, (pun intended.) These girls have found a way into our community heart (and onto the screensaver on Sister’s cell phone!" I am already looking forward to next summer and "Wonder Week" 2010. Perhaps, we’ll have 12 little "wonder-girls?" You never know…at least I never know. The GOD of wonder has things under control. Maybe, just maybe, I won’t worry as much next year. Miracles do happen...
After sharing the Sunday Eucharist with the monastic community, I drove an hour north-west, to our little house in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I had three days of silence, sleep and solitude - much-needed and much-appreciated. It was high time to stop and take stock of the blessings of May and June. On top of my list of blessings are six names: Abby, Morgan, Maggie, Kristina, Isabelle and Alyssa. GOD bless our “wonder-girls” until we meet again…
Blessings and love to you all…
